Does anyone remember the "Pee-hole block" ? Nancy Metas: A strong memory I have of you after our victory at Camp Lejeune; chearing your loudest in best cheerleading style as our bus left the stadium. My back was killing me from a scissor tackle, but your enthusiasm was a big part of the pleasure of that day. Thanks for the site, Greg. Great idea. I would be curious to know if anyone knows anything about old girlfriends Cindy Noren and Kristen Brandt. I don't see them on the list. I would also be curious about Mike something-or-other (senior moment) who threw the shot on the track team (I was the long-jumper). He and I had some good times together cadging free meals at the Greek place in Quantico town. The owner was a QHS sports booster of the best sort. On my second marriage. This is it. 1/11/2001: I can remember a game we played in the rain at Marine Corps stadium where I had something to do with the loss. I was not much of a tackler in those days. I was playing safety on the play and the opposing QB dropped a pass off in the flat to their big fullback who suddenly was deep in the secondary. Rather than hitting him low and wrapping up, I jumped on his back. He carried me from the 50 yd line almost to the goal line before I could get my feet under his and trip him up. They scored on the next play, and won the game 12 - 6. In my defense, I scored our only touchdown on a sweep right. 1/11/2001: Hi Greg What a surprise! I know you must remember we played football together in 1964 at QHS. We had two really good games (wins) against Bullis and Camp Lejeune. The rest were rather forgettable, including a rout at St. Stephens. I enjoyed playing with you as a running back and receiver. You had a good arm and were certainly not the reason we lost so many games. Maybe the fact that we had only about sixty students in a class at QHS had something to do with it. Anyway until I got your email I had not thought about those times in a long time. It was good to hear from you. I don't know if I can come to the reunion in October but it would be fun. I've been working in and around the 'Music Industry' for many years now, although I just manage the record store now. It's in Atlanta and it's called Wax'n'Facts. The store has been open for 26 years and I've been working there for 24 of them. I've done graphics and merchandising and manufacturing for various bands up until the late 80's and I did Road Work for a bunch of different bands at the same time. I worked with three bands, primarily, and I doubt you have heard of them. But I did some work with the B-52's and then they became famous and I did some work with the Black Crowes and then they became famous. Gee, I must be pretty good. Well, I really liked working with musicians although it really took me far away from my training, which is painting and drawing and printmaking. I graduated from UGA with a BFA in those areas and Art History in 1980, but only after dropping out, literally, from college and just about everything else in 1977. Moved to Atlanta then, worked at the store and with a group called the Fans and later the Brains, who had two records on Mercury (the label, not the planet) and achieved notoriety for having one of their songs covered by Cyndi Lauper, which allowed the leader to retire. I went back to the store in 82, got married then divorced in '84. I was working really hard as a studio artist but no gallery. A few shows, some sales, but no 'success'. Still, that was my passion, but I decided to try road production again with a band called the Swimming Pool Q's who had two albums on A&M and one on Capitol and a few on their own. I quit when they were paying me more than they were making. Only fair, I thought (so did they!). So, I've been at the store full time since '87 or so. Got married in 95 and I have two children; Nicholas, 6 and Rosemary, 4. Put the art career on hold while I pay for the phenomenal amount of bills that raising two kids generates. Hardest work I ever did, even harder than grunting out wind sprints for Coach or getting my ass kicked by the starters (ahem!). I'm trying to get in touch with Jim Burke, Charles Mader, Doris Torreador, Steve Rymer, Margaret Ursetti, Karen Cole. He lived with me until January (during which he had to ride out Hurricane Wilma) when I was finally able to find a retirement home he liked up in Port Charlotte. I'm sorry I won't be able to make the reunion again this year, but my dad's World war II reunion is the same week in Las Vegas. At 87, I keep thinking each one is going to be his last. Only 18 made it last year, so it's important that he go. My kids are pressing me to move back to Texas, and I probably will, eventually. Rick 5/30/06: Miscellaneous Info.: In April 1963, my father was transferred to Cherry Point Marine Air Station, NC and I graduated from Havelock High School in June 1964. I went to college at the university of Arizona, earning a BSEd and a MEd as well as a commission in the Air Force. Along the way, I also received a Doctor of education degree from Texas A&M University. I retired after 20 years service with the rank of Lt. Col. and moved College Station, TX so that my son and daughter could also attend Texas A&M. They are now both married and living in Houston. My 33 year old son is a construction manager and my 31 year old daughter is a teacher. Between them, they have given me three grandchildren so far. My children are truely my proudest accomplishments. I now live in Forst Myers, FL where I am self-employed as an executive consultant and corporate trainer. My wife of 36 years died in 2005, but my 87 year old father lives nearby in Port Charlotte, FL. Since leaving Quantico, I have never run across anyone I went to school with, but I am always happy to respond to e-mails from former classmates of QHS or Havelock High. 1/8/2002: Greg, No, I don't remember running into Jim Slayton, but I got out my '63 Boondocker and I do remember you. We played on the football team together until I quit when basketball practice began. You might have known my brother Johnny better since he was in your class. Unfortunately, it was difficult to remain close with anyone with everyone moving around. No one ever seemed to stay long enough to really feel part of the school. I haven't been back to Havelock High School since the day I walked across the stage and got my diploma. We go to my wife's high school reunions because I went to collge with so many of her classmates. I will see if I can track him down. Also, several years ago a very familiar face walked past me at a burger joint. It was Tina Ritzau. Her dad had retired here in San Diego. I'll see if I can relocate her as well. I noticed Mike Welby signed up. I used to ride at the stables with his sister, Sharon, I believe. Do you know what happened to Larry Walt? I read that his brother made it to a reunion. I'll fill out my bio shortly. After living back East in Pennsylvania for several years, I moved back to the West Coast after Dad retired from the Navy (dentist). Was married to my husband, Ron Aguilar, in 1982. He's a computer security design engineer for the Jet Propulsion Lab (NASA). I "retired" from Alcoa Defense Systems as a computer graphics specialist to raise our two little boys, who came into our lives veeeerrrry late. Get a load of this: they are currently 6 years and 9 years old. Keep me hoppin'. (I never take off my track shoes.) I still compete on horseback--hunters and jumpers, mostly. Used to compete back East in cross-country jumping competitions. Have about 12 "hayburners" on the farm right now. Ron is a runner. Ran in the San Diego half-marathon recently and came in two minutes slower than the winner of his division. Not bad for an old F_ _ T! We're also very involved in the boys' activities. We managed our older son's Little League team last year. Started off looking like the "Bad News Bears" and ended up in first place in the division. Just finished soccer season with our little guy. He's a very gifted athlete. The youth league here keeps bumping him up to the next level because he is so far ahead of kids in his age group. My older son is really into performing arts. Notes: 3/31/06: Mr. Kalasky's name was Rudolph S. Kalasky, age 77. No one is sure of what date he came to Quantico, but Wayne Craig thinks he was probably in 1967 (the year after Wayne came). Rudy started out as a Math teacher (Trig, I think), became Asst. Principal around 1971, and served as principal in the late 80s, retiring in '90. The funeral today at the Quantico National Cementary was a gathering of many, including over twenty of retired/current administrators and teachers who had worked with Mr. K. There are only about seven current teachers left on the staff at the high school who actually worked with him. It was a fine tribute to a very sincere and dedicated man who was beloved by so many. Thank you for taking the time to ask about Mr. K. He and I came together to that big reunion at Larson's Gym a few years ago and had such a marvelous time.
